Accent change likely?

My accent never went away, I never worked at it. My brother's accent is gone, he spent years denying his roots and worked hard to lose it. When he speaks the old tongue (Scots Gaelic) he does sound fairly awful. I bet it depends on your language skills and how hard you work at it. I hope you do not lose your mother tongue.
