Can i play online with wifi compatable games without upadting my wii to 3.3?

Hi basically i have a japanese wii and i am using freeloader at the moment to play uk games, can i play online with wifi compatable games without updating my wii to 3.3j at the moment i have no games but im thinking of getting mario kart wii so can some one let me know thanks
